MedizinischeUniversitaet Wien (MUV) - Austria

http://www.meduniwien.ac.at/

The Medical University of Vienna is the largest medical research institution in Austria. It was founded in 1365 as a Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and operates as an autonomous university since 2004. The Section for Science of Complex Systems pursues quantitative complex systems research - ranging from life science, quantitative social sciences, to applied mathematics and fundamental physics.

Main tasks in the project: MUV will be involved in the harmonization and integration of different approaches to AB modelling of financial markets; in particular researcher will extend existing AB models to leverage, crisis and regulation. Moreover MUV will also have the task of connecting the financial model to the macro model in order to understand, forecast and possibly prevent the formation of bubbles and crisis and to enhance financial stability.

Key MUV personnel working on this project

Stefan THURNER, Full Professor in Science of Complex Systems

He founded the Complex Systems Research Group (now Section for Science of Complex Systems) in 2003. External professor at the Santa Fe institute since 2007, Thurner is also research fellow at IIASA since 2010. After his PhD in theoretical physics at the Technical University of Vienna (1995), he held a postdoctoral research positions at Humboldt Universität Berlin and Boston University and later he joined the MUV. In 2001 he got a second PhD in economics at the University of Vienna and his Qualification in theoretical physics. Since 1995 he has published more than 120 scientific articles and currently holds 2 patents. In 2007 he was a fellow at the Collegium Budapest. He is engaged in COST actions, where he serves as the Austrian delegate, and the FP7 CA INSITE. He is a member of several scientific boards and is coeditor of several journals. Thurner does consulting for financial institutions since 2003.

Michael SZELL, Research Assistant

He received his master in technical mathematics at the Vienna University of Technology in 2007. Scientific interests: analysis and modeling of complex systems, sociophysics, as well as econophysics and behavioral economics. Szell has co-developed a browser-based massive multiplayer online game since 2004. As of 2011 the game has a worldwide user-base of over 350,000 players and is actively played by 16,000 people. For commercially handling the game he cofounded an enterprise in 2006 of which he is manager.

Peter KLIMEK, Research Assistant

Peter Klimek is research associate at the Complex Systems Research Group at the Medical University of Vienna since 2007. He obtained a Master degree in physics at the University of Vienna in 2007 Research interests: Modeling Schumpeterian economics, Network analysis, dynamics on networks. Klimek has published scientific articles on application of physics to mathematical logic, sociology, political sciences, administrative sciences and evolutionary biology.
